At this point as revealed in the song titles, it was not only the line
up of the band that had been going through changes as, WAYNE started to
transform into JAYNE. During this period the band again toured, and Safari
records intended to release the single I HAD TOO MUCH TO DREAM LAST NIGHT,
/ F*** OFF (cat no. safe 6 ) in May 78, but cancelled it and decided instead
to release the EP BLATANTLY OFFENSIVE in June 78 ( which I suppose it
was, lyrically anyway, ed:)

BLATANTLY
OFFENZIVE EP
(cat no.W.C.2.)
Released
June 78 |
BLATANTLY
OFFENSIVE four tracks:
1. F*** OFF, 2. NIGHT TIME, 3.TOILET LOVE
4. MEANMUTHAF***IN' MAN
Tracks 1 2 & 3 were recorded in the GREG VAN COOK era, and track 4 was
recorded later with HENRI PADOVANI and ELLIOT MICHAELS.
The E.P. was produced by MERVYN SLIME who was in reality
DEEP PURPLES producer MARTIN BIRCH, hired by SAFARI RECORDS who
were formerly known as PURPLE RECORDS, DEEP PURPLES record label. He also
produced THE ELECTRIC CHAIRS earlier singles, and the bands 1st & 2nd
albums, doing a workmanlike production job on the records, but as he had
never seen the band live, and had limited exposure to punk, he did not
capture the edge in the performances, or the dynamics of the live sound,
which the band felt were essential for a good "Chairs" gig, and the records
didn't always reflect the true nature of the bands sound, or performance
Also during June 78, Wayne had to leave England because of visa problems
and decided to stay in Berlin. While in Berlin, Wayne took in the Berlin
night life / culture and had the famous "nose job". Meanwhile, Elliot
Michaels went back to New York for a few weeks, and the band took a confused,
enforced break. Henri Padovani went back to his native Corsica, while
Val Haller and JJ Johnson stayed in London. Later JJ hitchiked across
France to join Henri for a few weeks, and while there played an impromtu
gig at a large music festival with Henri and some local musicians.

The band also parted company with their original manager,
around this time, and after a difficult search, they eventually found new
management. The tour continued, taking in various mixed sized gigs in SCOTLAND,
the north and the rest of the U.K., culminating with a major London gig
at Camdens ELECTRIC BALLROOM in December 1978.
This gig was videoed but went unreleased and would have shown the beginnings
of WAYNES transformation into JAYNE. Unfortunately, there is very little
film footage of Wayne and The Electric Chairs as some of the best gigs and
moments were never filmed.
Known movie
clips are
DON LETTS, PUNK ROCK MOVIE, filmed at the
ROXY CLUB, DEREK JARMANS
JUBILEE,
' ROCKPALAST ' German TV 78
and a German film PUNK
IN LONDON which is really interesting as it was shot by a German
camera crew in late 1976 & early 1977, and captures the initial excitement
and rise of PUNK featuring performances and interviews with numerous significant
people and bands of the time.

Around August
78, musical directions were beginning to change after the raw, adrenaline,
innovative, electric, experimental, gobbing, pogoing rush of early punk
in 76-77, excitement levels were beginning to fluctuate, and the media,(
who were mostly initially resistant to punk in the early days,) decided
that
POWER POP would replace PUNK as the next new youth movement, despite
massive music press attention, glowing reviews, and hyping of the bands,
power pop had less impact, and bands such as THE
PLEASERS, and ADVERTISING, among others,
gigged extensively but seemed to push different buttons to the ones in
PUNK.
Also around this time, bands from the city of LEEDS, such as, THE
MEKONS, THE GANG OF FOUR, THE DELTA FIVE, etc, coupled with MANCHESTER
bands like, JOY DIVISION, THE
BUZZCOCKS , MAGAZINE
etc were playing more significant gigs in LONDON and the U.K. and, were
attracting a lot of press attention for their gigs and records, and were
building strong fan bases.
This was later followed in 1979 by TWO
TONE, a mixture of SKA and PUNK, by bands such as THE SPECIALS and THE BEAT among others.
